Show off the models you've painted using paint masks!

  1. Started by Kevin Futter,

If you've painted a model using paint masks, this forum is the place to show them off! It can be masks you've cut yourself, either manually or using a cutter, or they could be from a commercial mask set you bought. Just include a brief explanation for the benefit of your readers. Note that you can't upload your model photos directly to the forums, and will have to link them from a third-party image host, such as Imgur or ImageShack. I look forward to seeing all your fantastic builds! Kev

I started this build as part of the Messerschmitt Bf 109s & Derivatives Group Build on LSP, and have just wrapped it up. I chose to use the Bulgarian markings supplied in the kit for something different, and am grateful to Dany Boy over on LSP for providing some very useful reference material. It's quite an unusual and striking scheme for a 109! I used the kit decals for the national markings, but sprayed white squares under them using masks I cut on the Silhouette Portrait. While I was there, I cut some for the white 9 numerals on the upper wings and fuselage sides. The black 9s on the lower wings were the kit decals. Some final notes. The engineering of the lan…

Hobby Boss F6F-3 Hellcat built as White 36 on USS Hornet in June 1944 The kit itself is very simple, light on details but the fit was much better than I was expecting. My biggest issue with it is the decals which were scaled oddly and looked toyish As the interior and decals were not that great I decided on closed canopy which would end up being be one of the key lessons learned I masked both sides of the canopy, prepped the inside then unmasked, cleaned and glued to the fuselage and continued with the rest of the build - at the very end when removing the outside masks discovered I managed to get overspray (which also highlighted some residue) on the inside of the canopy …

  4. just finished this build of Tamiya's BF109E4-7 Trop kit built as 7/JG26 White 12 the kit was a lot of fun, fit was excellent and no real major issues building painted in RLM 74/75/76 used the canopy masks and insignia from the downloads section here (thank you gents!), I then created the heart and numbers canopy I used tamiya masking sheets and the rest used oracal 810 I almost had the unit emblem in a mask, but the small black trim along the top and the right side were a little too small so used the supplied decal the masks worked perfectly with the exception of the swastika on the tail, one of them wasn't placed exactly right and didn't notice until I pulled everyth…

  5. Hello all. Firstly, thanks to Kev for resetting my password. This getting old(er) isn't what it's cracked up to be! 😁 Secondly, a huge thanks to @Mozart for the custom serial and codes for this one. I supplied Max with a single dimension and he did the rest. Max, you're a star. 🙏 The remainder of the stencils are the 1ManArmy set designed to replace the Airfix decals. They aren't entirely accurate and had to be modified on occasion to get closer to those on MK356. Built to honour the memory of Squadron Leader Mark Long who perished at the controls on 25th May, 2025. I recognize some of the membership from LSP so I apologize to…

  6. I started this build back in 2020, and then it got stalled by whole bunch of major life changes. I resumed it again last year, and was able to finally finish it this year. It's the Revell boxing of the old Matchbox 1/32 Tiger Moth kit, combined with the 1/32 air ambulance conversion set from Uncle Les. This consisted of some resin spine pieces and a vacform windscreen/canopy, along with some home-printed decals. I used the decals as the basis for creating my own paint masks on the Silhouette Portrait, and here is the result! And its final resting place: This is the first aircraft model I've rigged since I was a kid, and I'm not particularly happy with my pro…

  7. This is the Arma Hobby 1/48 Hurricane done from the box. OK, but being me it's not absolutely according to the instructions. I went for a tropicalised variant from 34 Sqn in India 1943-1944. This utilised the tropical filter which is supplied in the kit, but not used by the supplied decal options; this is also true of the bombs: I replaced the kit bombs (which are supplied but not used) with a pair from ICM's RAF WWII weapons set. It also had an interesting colour scheme according to the reference I found: a variant of Azure Blue underneath, with Dark Earth/Dark Green in a modified pattern above. The Azure is there as many aircraft in this theatre at thi…

Hello, I've just joined this forum so let me intruduce myself. My name is Bogdan, I'm a modeller from Poland. I build only 1/32 scale models - mostly Italian WWII. I just hate using decals because some of them are undpredictable duing (or after) application process so I definitely prefer masks. I've built several models using Montex mask and MRP paints with quite satisfactory effect but several days ago I bought Cameo Silhouette 4 plotter and my plan is to learn how to cut my own masks so the decals will no longer be needed. And here is short review of my latest builds with the use of masks. Some smal or complicated details are decals - but not too many of the…

I finished this build earlier this year as part of the Silver Jubilee Group Build over at LSP. In case you're not sure, this is a resin kit of the Fokker D.XXI in 1/32 scale by Silver Wings. I had a few issues with the build, but most of them were self-inflicted. The main markings were scanned from the decals and cut as masks using my Silhouette Portrait. Only the smaller insignia and stencils were used from the kit decals. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Thanks for looking! Kev

  10. Started by Kevin Futter,

I started this kit a few years ago as part of a Group Build on LSP, but quickly stalled out. It made a couple of returns to the bench, before I finally committed to getting it finished earlier this year. Initially it was meant to be a quick build, so I elected not to rescribe it, or fix the inaccurate main wheel bays, but with a bunch of legacy aftermarket in the box, it quickly evolved into something more complicated. The main aftermarket sets were a Grand Phoenix resin cockpit, resin main wheels (True Details I think), Moskit exhausts, and a Squadron vac canopy (of which I only used the sliding section). The tail antenna and the windscreen rear …

By way of an introduction to the forum here are a few of my previous builds, up until now I have been using commercially available paint masks for my builds. I am hoping to change that with the recent purchase of a Cricut Explore 3. HobbyBoss 1/48 Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat (all markings painted using a Montex vinyl masking set) HobbyBoss 1/48 F…

  12. Started by Mozart,

Funnily enough I haven't built that many WW2 RAF fighters in standard camouflage, and those few I have "free-handed" with the airbrush. But with the sublime Tamiya Spitfire kit I decided to explore making camouflage masks. I scanned the colour A3 sheet provided with the kit then imported the image onto the Silhouette screen, starting with the wings: I measured the distance from leading to trailing edge on the kit where the wing walk stripe goes, then scaled the image onscreen to match that distance (just draw a straight line the measured distance, rotate and move it over the wing image and drag that out to match the line size). …

  13. Scratchbuilt RC model, 42” LOA. I bought my Cameo4 for projects like this. I used it to make the masks for the flight deck, including the elevators and numbers. A little OT for this group, but I also cut a lot of little parts with the Cameo, out of .010 and .020 sheet styrene. The Cameo is a great tool when you need about 50 little triangular brackets, all the exact same size!

  14. Started by Kevin Futter,

This was supposed to be a quick little side project to give me an excuse to print something on my Elegoo Saturn 3D printer, but like most of my projects, dragged on and got more complicated. I decided to try to recreate the metallic effects and overall weathering as close to what we see on screen as possible, and late in the piece, I decided it needed a base for stability purposes. The lettering on the base was cut with my Silhouette Portrait and applied over a white base, and SMS Jet Black applied over the top. Took me 3 goes to get this right! So what was supposed to take a few days has ended up taking a few months, but here it is. …

  15. Hello, Here the Tarangus 1/72 SAAB JA37 Viggen, using my paint-masks. I used a Silhouette Portrait for the canopy, wheels and landing gear wheels. The splinter cammo was made using Maestro Models masking set. Painted using MRP paints.

Hello, Here is my latest model. The second one since my recovery after 18 years of abstinence. It is the Fw 190 A8 of Josef Priller of the JG 26. Some particularities for a FW 190 A8: - No outer wing guns and no matching bumps. This is the first series of A8s lightened of the outer 20 mm guns. Later the A8 received the "universal" wing with bumps to accommodate the Mk 108. - The propeller, new on the pictures, has external balancing weights. The model is the Tamiya Fw 190 F8 that was lying in my huge stock. The interior features the Eduard photo etched for this model and the propeller, with external weights, comes from Ultracast. Paint: RLM 76 Aeromaster, …

  17. My recently completed 1/48 Hasegawa Typhone Mk Ib with Montex Masks. Only decal was the pilots kill board. First time using masks successfully. The issue I see for me it transferring and getting the right things to stick. Did a little test before with Stars/Bars and that was entertaining. Maybe I'll just stick to Japanese aircraft! 🤣

I originally built this model some time in the early '90s, after just getting back into the hobby from a long layoff. In 2007, I decided to rebuild it rather than toss it out, and can actually present before and after photos! Here it is as originally built and painted, prior to being disassembled for the rebuild (apologies for the crappy photo): And after several months' work, which featured lots of scratchbuilding and a complete rescribe, here's the renovated result: Needless to say, all the markings, save for the tail number and a few stencils, were painted on using hand-cut masks (this …

The idea behind this was to create something for the Spruce goose. What if Howard Hughes had finally got his beloved "Hercules" into service, maybe in time for Korea? Why not? https://u.cubeupload.com/SAEvans/HK13.jpg This was my very first use of the Silhouette 3 for creating a full set of markings. So basically I needed something fairly simple, not too intricate for me to get to grips with using the programme and the machine. I practised on a number of types of vynil and transfer tapes...lessons learned for future projects of a more daring nature.

  21. HI everyone, I joined this forum a long time ago, but it kinda fell by the wayside due to too much time spent on Farcebook. Here are some of my completed models which I painted while using masks cut by my silhouette portrait. WNW Fokker D.VII. Roden Albatros D.I Hasegawa Bf 109F4 PCM TA 152C And finally this 1976 vintage Revell Bf 109G6 that has been modified by a few Trumpeter parts. Thank you for looking!

Now, I know the Beaufighter is a classic but just imagine for one moment if BOAC decided to use this amazing aircraft on it's wartime passenger runs instead of the Mosquito? It might look something like this: All the lettering is done with masks cut on the Silhouette, apart from the BOAC stuff on the tail which was just too small in this scale (Tamiya 1/48 kit) which was printed as a decal...crap too it is...never mind, I't all a learning curve. Internally I made a new floor, with 3 passenger seats as well as the crew-man in the reas, with storage locker, new windows and yes, it even ha…

  23. Started by Steve Evans,

This is my second attempt at using the Silhouette Portrait 3 for paint masks. A little more involved this time and I have to say it seems like a pretty good result for the markings. ALL of which were sprayed on, so no pesky decalling to fight with. I've uploaded the Silhouette image into the downloads section if anyone wants to try them out in the future. They are a straight replacement for the Tamiya decals, with a few tweaks to get a more accurate set of markings. (eg. Size of the upper wing crosses and style of the tail numbers)
