Welcome aboard, sir!
It's ironic that even though I run the site, I'm no expert at mask cutting myself! That's partly why I created the site, I guess. That said, I personally use a Silhouette Portrait, and find it fine for my needs. I don't think the Cameo is capable of cutting any finer or smaller, but rather, it can handle larger material sizes, and a wider variety of them I believe. I don't have any additional blades or cutting mats, and just use the supplied free version of the Silhouette Studio software.
I went with the Portrait partly because it was cheaper, partly because it has a much smaller footprint, and partly because reviews suggested it was perfectly fine for my needs when compared with the Cameo. So, the Portrait would be my suggestion!

Welcome aboard, Jerry!
Glad you found us, and glad to have you here!

I guess I'll have to find the time to do some basic promotion wherever I can, but I think we're a long way from a being a finished (as in complete) site, so there's still a lot of room to grow and improve before it ever needs to settle into being a static library. Would love to hear from more of our members in this thread, too!

Thanks, Dave. In theory, SMPM should have an even broader appeal than LSP, since it caters to pretty much every genre of scale modelling, and in every scale. My lack of leadership here is partly to blame for its current state, but I still think it's a concept worth persevering with. Max has been great in posting tutorials and answering member questions, so we really just need some more contributions like that. But I guess most people have more questions than answers about cutting your own masks, and like me, aren't really in a position to contribute so much.
Still, I'll keep working on it!

Things have been very quiet around here lately, and that's partly my fault, as I haven't had much time to spend here myself in recent times. And sadly, I'm also not an expert in the art and science of cutting paint masks, so it's difficult for me to lead from the front, so to speak. I would, however, hate to see this place wither and die, when it has the potential to be such a useful resource to the general modelling community.
So, in the spirit of community engagement, I'm reaching out to you guys to sound off, and let us know that you're still here! I'd like for this site to become a comprehensive online library of masking resources, but we're just at the baby steps stage right now. I'm hoping we can grow it together as a community, so any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks for uploading these, Iain. I think I'll be using these myself! Note that I've moved them into the dedicated Canopy Masks section.

I haven't bothered with the upgrade yet, but I'm hardly an advanced or experienced user at this stage. Maybe one day I will, but in my limited use so far, I haven't needed to.

Yeah, it seems a very strange business decision, and reminds me a lot of the Photobucket debacle.

Just picked up this news from Facebook, which pointed to a news article on The Verge:
https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/15/22332212/cricut-crafting-machine-design-space-upload-limit
I'm not a Cricut user, so I don't fully appreciate the context of this news, but would love to hear from any of our members who are, and can discuss it in more detail. Sounds like bad news, though.

Hi everyone,
I've just done a quick spring-clean of the General Discussion area, as I realised that there were a few posts here that really belonged elsewhere in the forums. To that end, I've moved a few out of here to the areas they more appropriately belong. If possible, I'd like to reserve the General Discussion area for off-topic posts and threads, that don't otherwise relate to the core business of the site.
And on that note, if you feel you'd like to make a post relating to scale model paint masks, but can't see anywhere else but General Discussion to put it, let me know, as it may be a sign that we need to either expand or refine our existing forum sections. In other words, I'm open to suggestions to improve the structure and content of the forums.

Server Migration!
in Site Info
Posted
Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of migrating Scale Model Paint Masks to a new server. This will necessitate a little bit of downtime, which I hope to keep to a minimum. I'll switch the forums to maintenance mode on the old server when I'm ready to switch, and enable them on the new server. If you're still seeing the forums as being offline, then you'll know you're still connecting to the old server, not the new one. Once the new DNS settings have propagated, you should be fine - though this might require you to restart your browser, and possibly even clear your caches.
I won't post any more updates here about this, as it'll be kind of pointless, so keep an eye on the KLP Facebook page for further news. I'll also post an update here once the transfer is complete.
See you on the other side!
