Hi, Thanks for the invite.
I administrate the facebook "cutting edge " plotter/cutter group dedicated to scale modeling and cutters. Kevin told me about this website a couple days ago.
I think this website is a great thing especially for those using cricut machines. Now they have a place they can load files without the annoyance of facebook interfering. I really enjoy using cutters in scale modeling and look forward to seeing what comes out of this effort to put this one a website.
Great to have you! Although Im no longer on FB, I agree 100% that this site could be a great boon to a lot of modelers

G'day Ladies and Gents,
I've never made paint masks, however I'm familiar with Adobe Illustrator and I'm planning to make paint masks for my 1/24 Jagtviggen. Therefore I'm here to learn all about paint masks.
Welcome Rainer!

Great to have you here. As it happens, I've never made paint masks either, despite owning a Silhouette Portrait for nearly 2 years now! I'm here to learn, too.
I've had a little Portrait Silhouette for years now, and have made many, many mask sets, but Im still almost always learning something new I didn't know how to do, or something I didnt realize the software could do. So many possibilities with these, its almost endless.

Welcome!!

Yep! Im only using Inkscape atm, but dont really like it that much, so when I do find a suitable new program for AutoCAD, Ill probably be importing my own after conversion too.

Really need to get a copy for myself......

Hi All! I've ordered some Oramask 810 and looking forward to playing with it with my Silhouette cutter.
I'm curious about using transfer tape to move complex designs (Enterprise Aztec masks, anyone?) from backing paper onto a model. My understanding is that the 810 is pretty low-tack, and the only transfer tape I've used up til now has been pretty strong. I've no idea how that combo would work well together.
Is there a better choice than the transfer tape I've been using with Oracal 651?

Hey Chris,
I do exactly what Max has listed, and use crystal clear Frisket film, normally used for airbrushing and available at most craft/hobby stores. I have used Oracal 810 as that is what I normally cut my masks out of, but the frisket film has the advantage of letting you see exactly where the mask will be placed. its a bit tougher with the Oracal stuff to know exactly where you are at.

Thanks Mike, proves to me that the Designer edition does everything I need!
Yep! 100% Agreed Max! I got the DE software only to be able to import Vectors, but the nesting feature and other bits proved to be useful as well. So far the DE does everything I need, and have not lacked for anything yet.
One of THE most useful features in the Silhouette software (which IIRC is available in the base form) IMHO is the "Edit Points" feature. It allows you to pull/straighten/curve or in general tweak and image to your liking after it has been put through the outlining procedure to be able to cut.

Wow, that is gorgeous!
+2!!
That look amazing really............and SO dinky too! Im hoping to do this very thing when the Jet-Mads JA37 comes out.

These were copied right from the actual Bandai mask sets available elsewhere. I just couldnt get them when I needed them, so just imported and sized them up on the Silhouette.
Turned out quite well I think. The Bandai SW kits are all AMAZING imho:

Lovely! Quite well done actually. Congrats!

Yes indeed Max, very handy! Will have to try my hand at this, as its one thing I have not yet tried w/my Silhouette.

FAQ section would be a great Idea I think Kev

For the Silhouette cutters IIRC, I think you will need the Silhouette "designer edition". This gets you things like the ability to import .svg/Vector files as well as gets you the nesting feature to enable more efficient cutting.

Yes, me too! Although I dont have that many airliner kits atm, (2 atm to be exact) I really love some of the airliner schemes. All the decals, such as the All Blacks 1/1/44th 777 I got have full carrier around the designs, so a cutter would seem very appropriate there.

Yep, same! I've come to the conclusion, that every time I think I know all about what is what, there are some super cool ideas that get brought up by others, including new and useful ways of doing things.
I also have found there are several areas in the Silhouette software that are quite useful, but are not that known, but just take practice to get working well.

Yep, that is some great stuff! Really the sky is the limit with these, as I've done the same for a friend who wanted a black rose on his Harley!

Hey Brian, did you do these before Rowan did the decal sheet, or was this done to correct the stars he provides which are smaller and farther out from the axle? Thanks for posting :)
I actually never had the Rowan sheet! But got it after I ruined the top decals of the wing on my model with some masks. Not really sure how they compare to the decal sheet, as its been about 3 years!

Thats a nice option, to upload and replace an existing version to update, or to just rename, and get a 2nd version up.
