Roundels not really round - do i have unrealistic expectations?
Well - you are confirming my results! I am VERY happy with the Siser. The Portrait probably would have been fine for me - i have had a few bigger cuts but 8" would be sufficient for almost everything. Without knowing for sure the Siser is probably still the more accurate one - but obviously at a big premium over the Portrait. Based on my experience and what I have read since starting this venture i can't recommend the Camo 5 for this type of work. I'll try to do that - just very cumbersome to upload pictures or I would have done it already.

Roundels not really round - do i have unrealistic expectations?
I finally gave up, and just bought a Siser Juliet. My very first cut was small circles and text (2.5mm and 5 mm Diameter, and same height for text) on 810S. Without any adjustments and using a 45 degree blade, the results are clearly substantially better than my Silhouette Cameo Alpha. It also comes with a 60 degree blade that is supposed to be better than 45 for fine detail, so I believe the cuts can be even better. I am convinced i will be able to use the Juliet for my original purpose - Royal Danish Airforce roundels, split flags, and squadron numbers in 1/48 scale. The results might be good enough that i can do it in 1/72 scale. Yes - the Juliet is more expensive at ~$400 versus ~$225 for the Cameo. It is also seems like it is a lot better built - the Cameo feels very plasticky. There may be downsides with the software, but time will tell. I am VERY happy I made the switch, and will be very comfortable starting some of the original detailed schemes I had planned. PS: It is possible i just got a Cameo lemon. I have seen others complain about the Cameo 5 accuracy, but I saw cuts for some earlier Cameo versions that seemed better than mine.

How cool! 810S is also hard to get, though both can be had in big rolls. Have no idea why. 813 and other types are available everywhere. And with the tariffs it is a lot harder to source from abroad. I do think it is a little troubling with the Cameo 5, compared to yours. I saw another topic with a person having similar issues. Makes me think I should have spent the extra money on a Siser Juliet, or just stuck with a smaller model.

That is very kind of you to offer. I ordered some from a place in California. $45 for 15" x 10 yds - so will last me a life time! I'm In North Carolina - think I saw you are in England? I don't think it will fix the circle issue - but the 810S is not very sticky, so that is good reason to get the 810. I really thought the Artool would be as good, but that is not the case.

Silhouette CAMEO5α after Christmas sale, trying to decide between the "Portrait 4" and the "Cameo 5"
I have the same issue. I found a 15" x 10 yards for $22 + $15 shipping at McLogan Supply - though I didn't order it . Otherwise you are looking at $100 + for a big roll...

Main Deck and Deckhouse Deck Walkway Masks
Main Deck and Deckhouse Deck Walkway Masks The attached masks is for the deck pathways on the Tamiya 1/350m Fletcher. I had tried to use thin strips of tape, but the curves made it virtually impossible. They are not perfect, but worked well for me - see the images of the painted result. I will be adding camouflage masks soon for the upper part of the ship. I did the lower part manually before I got my cutter - otherwise it would have been prefect for masks! PS: I am NOT a ship guy - so not sure I am using the right terminology! File Information Submitter Henrik Submitted 01/16/2026 Category Boats & Ships View File

Roundels not really round - do i have unrealistic expectations?
Thanks Max, Below you see the latest test cuts. The circles are respectively 5mm, 2.5mm and 4.5/2.25mm RADIUS. The font is 8 pts. I drew circles around the cuts to better show the unevenness of the circles. It is noteworthy that the diameter of the circles changes from when the cut starts until it ends. Contrast that with your cuts. The circles are much better and the diameter doesn't change from start to finish. You also have almost no tear from the knife entry. Seems a new brand new model (Silhouette Cameo 5 Alpha) should perform better than a 12 year old. I could try to get the 810 (very hard to find, and expensive), but I don't see how it can fix the circles even if it improves the entry tear (the tear improved from the Artool to the 810S). So I am at a loss...

Well - that looks better! You are using more force and a much deeper blade (assuming they are comparable) than the other recommendations, and also what I tested. You can see traces of the blade entry, but not nearly as visible as mine. I will definitely have to try again. BTW - just to confirm - that is 10 and 5 mm in Diameter, correct? I re-did some cuts but had to lower the blade depth again back to 3. I also lowered the speed to 1. I might be getting better results, but the circles still seem less round that yours, and I still get an entry tear bigger than yours. I have determined the Oramask 810S produces better results than the Artool Ultra Mask. Would you expect 810 to produce better results than 810S? Seems they would be similar in that aspect? BTW i did receive the Adapter set and was able to try out the ebay Graphtec 09 blades. Does NOT work well. Have to make the blade stick out much more than the Silhouette blade in order to cut, and the cuts are NOT clean. Been doing a lot of research, and getting very mixed messages. Appears the blade holder protrudes more than the standard Autoblade holder, causing issues - but then it is all very confusing, and am pretty much giving up on it. Mozart - can't thank you enough! For now I think I will put it aside, and accept the apparent limitations...

Greatly appreciate it! There is no hurry of course - but it will be helpful!!!

Roundels not really round - do i have unrealistic expectations?
Thanks - i was hoping they would be better. However, the circles are very small and imperfections do get magnified when taking close ups. Would it be possible for you to try and cut a 10 mm outer diameter and 5 mm inner diameter circle and check the results (5 and 2.5 mm radius)? It seems others who thought my results were bad got similar results on their machines. It would be very helpful. Thanks!

Received the Graphtec CB09 blades - but they don't fit the Cameo 5. Ordered adapter which will be here Friday, though it appears I also have to use a Dremel tool to make it fit in that. Sigh...

Actually that is VERY helpful. I searched for something like this yesterday and had no luck (the Omask don't ship to US anymore due to tariffs). Wish they went to 10mm (5mm radius), but I can cut those myself - less noticeable than the inner circles. And yes - it is still useful for other things. Right now I am crating the desk masks for a Tamiya Fletcher 1/350 - I tried to manually mask the paths on the deck (~2mm wide), but couldn't. The new cut masks work perfectly. Will post them soon. Also I am receiving the new 60 degree knifes today - will report back what the results are.

Roundels not really round - do i have unrealistic expectations?
Thanks Timbacat - I think you answered my original question. My expectations were too high... I would point out the RADIUS, not diameter, of the circles were 5mm and 2.5mm - and those are the correct 1/48 scale size of the Danish roundels on the Hawker Hunter since the late 60s (and also on every other RDAF fighter aircraft since - F-100, F-104, Draken and F-16). Fortunately I do have options to get these in decals, and I also really like your idea of buying pre-cut round stencils. I bought the cutter in the hope I could use this for the Danish aircrafts I had planned. There will of course be other uses of it, but still a little disappointing.

Thanks Timbacat for your input - here is answers to some of your questions Brand new auto blade (cutter is brand new) Believe setttings are correct - started with recommended settings from here, and made adjustments (over a dozen cuts using one variable at a time). Only major improver was talking the "Intelligent Path Technology" off. Blade that came with my new machine. THAT IS THE QUESTION - I assume you mean the cut, not the design (it is a vector circle using Silhouette Studios "circle") Yes - standard mat. Actually too adhesive, if you ask me. Definitely not moving. See below Thanks - might work. Though the circles themselves - ignoring the knife entry - are not perfect round. Given that Talbot had similar results using his Portrait 4, I am not sure it is a firmware issue, but rather we are looking at a very small circle with imperfections magnified. Per earlier posts I look try some different knifes as well. I really would love to see the results from others (Cricuts?, other brands? more silhouettes). It is a simple double circle with RADIUS of 5mm and 2.5mm, so diameter of 1 cm. Thanks to all of you!!!
