perfect example Kev
it's frustrating sometimes with all the work put into the build, paint and detail then something like that happens ☹️
for me it's two things
1) they used paint on the real things, so using masks looks much better and more authentic representation
2) for the life of me I don't know why but the silvering gods DO NOT LIKE ME

what you have there is much much better results, definitely better
I created simple circles at 5mm and 2.5mm, centred them both and then put a small cutout square around them
printed two of them on oramask 810
similar to yours, there are slight imperfections on the cut the closer you zoom in, personally nothing that I would be overly worried about
i've also been trying to compare the absolute round, initially they looked ok, then perhaps off slightly on the lower right a bit
but at this point my eye's are probably done for the day after work and looking back and forth between them isn't helping
pics are on a iphone, about an inch off the mask
note the 3rd pic is the sections peeled off, thus not correctly centered

interesting, the lower adhesion is an interesting point
I didn't know there was an 810S, but google says it's a solvent based adhesion so better for wet applications 'such as paint'
but my guess would be @denders is right with half the sticking power

That is really poor results and yes you should expect much better results IMHO
I'm not familiar with the Cameo 5, but I have the Portrait 4 and it cuts precise circles, squares, insignia's, letters, numbers, etc consistently
I use Oracal 810 vinyl or tamiya sheets
From a settings perspective in Silhouette I do one pass and 1 or 2 depth
Seems there's something weird going on for you

Hey Joe,
I've got the Portrait and the Sticky Matt is definitely the way to go, however I found the mat that came with it was extremely sticky
I ended up getting a Light Tack Matt (made by silhouette) off of amazon that is much easier to work with
If I'm understanding correctly the oramask 810, or any vinyl, might be challenged to wrap around wing tips. should do fuselages no problem
Tamiya masking sheets might be a better option if attempting to wrap around sharp or small edges
Note I've setup cutting profiles for both vinyl and tamiya sheets as the tamiya sheets can use less force

I enjoy and learn lots from their channel, Warwick has great style in getting the information across in the video's
when I picked up the hobby a couple of years ago I started with a couple of procon boy and a gaahleri to learn
but last year picked up an Evo 2024 and wow I instantly became a big fan of H&S, so much that I picked up a 2nd Evo
huge fan of their brushes and channel

I'm currently building a panther tank and trying to figure out if it's possible to make a re-usable mask with the silhouette cutter, something along the lines of the Quick Wheel accessory tool
I'm toying with the idea of creating a similar mask with 2 or more right sized circles and increasing the cut force to cut the vinyl and it's backing to create a re-usable card like mask, rather than printing sets for each build
Realize a 3d printer is probably better suited for this, but not looking to start down that path
So thought I'd see what some of you may have done
Cheers

Just sent a donation as well
Thank you Kev for all the work and resources you put into keeping this site available
Being somewhat new to the hobby and the site, I definitely appreciate the information here that I was able to learn how to create my own masks and make use of some of the templates available
But I do echo the same comments about the amount of traffic and long term viability. While it would be unfortunate if it shut down it's also very understandable.
Hoping for the best

Hi Talbot,
I've also used "fineliners" (Copic or Faber Castell) successfully for such fine lines.
I've successfully used acrylic markers with the finest tips and weathering pens. All pen types need to be protected with clear varnish as soon as possible.
Harry
ahh brilliant! simple and effective
thank you

embed imagesjust finished this build of Tamiya's BF109E4-7 Trop kit built as 7/JG26 White 12
the kit was a lot of fun, fit was excellent and no real major issues building
painted in RLM 74/75/76
used the canopy masks and insignia from the downloads section here (thank you gents!), I then created the heart and numbers
canopy I used tamiya masking sheets and the rest used oracal 810
I almost had the unit emblem in a mask, but the small black trim along the top and the right side were a little too small so used the supplied decal
the masks worked perfectly with the exception of the swastika on the tail, one of them wasn't placed exactly right and didn't notice until I pulled everything off, but managed to fix up ok by hand

thanks for looking!

trying to embed imagesHobby Boss F6F-3 Hellcat built as White 36 on USS Hornet in June 1944
The kit itself is very simple, light on details but the fit was much better than I was expecting. My biggest issue with it is the decals which were scaled oddly and looked toyish
As the interior and decals were not that great I decided on closed canopy which would end up being be one of the key lessons learned
I masked both sides of the canopy, prepped the inside then unmasked, cleaned and glued to the fuselage and continued with the rest of the build - at the very end when removing the outside masks discovered I managed to get overspray (which also highlighted some residue) on the inside of the canopy which you can see in some of the pics
This is my 12th build since starting the hobby a couple of years ago and 3rd time cutting and using my own masks, which I am happy I started down this path as the results look much better to me
I have Silhouette Portrait 4 and used Tamiya masking sheet for the Canopy and Wheel masks, and Oracal 810 for the Insignia and Numbers mask
Thank you to the folks contributing to the site library of Insignia's I was able to use
This is my first tri-color Hellcat and I had two goals for this build:
1) practice the tri-color (or more accurately 4 color) scheme using Vallejo USN Sea Blue for the top fuselage, Glossy Sea Blue for the wings and tail, Intermediate Blue and Insignia White
2) practice with the insignia and letters with masks
With the exception of the canopy, pretty happy with this build overall

Source of Oracal 810 in Canada or Calgary?
in Q & A
Thanks Harry,
I did find a place in Ontario called TheAshStickers and got a couple of rolls, but looks like they might have closed shop
I also found this place which I have not yet tried but seems to be priced decently
https://www.signsupplycanada.com/oramask-810-stencil-films-c-90_635_446/
but the Kitmasx might be a good option, and they carry other stencil masks like 1 man army which is good
when I'm ready to order more 810 I'll see what they have
